The Fire & Ice Winterfest is held each year over the first full weekend of February in the quaint resort town of Lava Hot Springs, Idaho (just over 2 hours North of Salt Lake City), famous for its natural spring-fed hot pools. Come, bring the family and celebrate winter!

WINE TASTING — Friday, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
at the Riverside Inn

Start the weekend off with a sampling of Northwest wines and appetizers at the Riverside Inn, located on the banks of the Portneuf River (255 E. Portneuf Ave). 

COST: For $25, you'll enjoy red wines, white wines, and dessert wines, along with their complimenting appetizers. Included in the price is a Fire and Ice Wine Glass to take home!  [ PRE-REGISTER and SAVE ]

DISC GOLF TOURNAMENT — Saturday,  9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Check in at the Lava Hot Springs Inn

Come out for a day of Disc Golfing, and enjoy what is becoming a growing year-round sport! Register at the Lava Hot Springs Inn across from the Olympic Swimming Complex. $5 lunch for participants at 78th Street Diner (at 78 Main Street).

COST: $15 - $35 entry fee (depending on division entered) includes a round of golf, a tee shirt, and a soak at the Lava Hot Springs Inn.

PRIZES: Cash and/or prizes awarded for top three scorers in each division.

WATER CARNIVAL — Saturday, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Indoor Aquatic Center

Free admission! The Children’s Water Carnival at Lava’s Indoor Aquatic Center is fun for kids of all ages! Games & prizes every 15 minutes. Events include float relays, wall climb races, diving contests, and a splash event. Held at the Indoor Aquatic Center, 195 N. Center.

SNOWSHOE AND NORDIC SKI EVENT — Saturday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Baker Ranch

Snowshoeing or Nordic Ski Snowball Toss in Lava's beautiful country hills. Enjoy the challenge of traversing over the snow and tossing tennis balls into buckets for points in an outdoor obstacle course!  

LOCATION: Baker Wagon Ranch is located at 11716 S. Dempsey Creek, and features a well-marked, 1-1/2 mile groomed trail and warming hut. Baker Ranch provides a great place to take in the wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. 

COST: $15 includes hot beverages, snacks, and snowshoe rental. 

PRIZES: $120, $90, and $60 prizes in wagon ride gift certificates will be awarded to the top scorers!  Snow shoes are limited, so make reservations in advance.

POLAR FLOAT PARADE— Saturday 2 p.m. on the Portneuf River

One of our zaniest events: the Polar Float Parade!  For those who dare to jump into the bone chilling Portneuf River, on a float tube, dressed in your craziest costume! All for a chance to win prizes and maybe international fame! In the past, we have seen wonderfully creative costumes, from the Easter Bunny to Santa Claus, to the infamous band KISS floating down the Portneuf. Do you dare jump in with the rest?

COST: $10 entry fee (includes tube rental). Register at Mountain Mayhem, 156 E. Main, sign a waiver and pick up your tube. Each year we have more and more brave contestants signing up, so get registered early. Entries accepted until we run out of tubes! Please pick up your tubes a few minutes early and avoid the rush to the starting point.

LOCATION: Contestants enter the river at the Old Pancake House bridge (253 E. Portneuf Ave.) and float for 1/4 mile to the Community building, where a warm fire will be waiting to warm you back up.

PRIZES: The best GROUP COSTUME (4 or more people) receive $100 cash plus $160 in gift certificates for the Alpaca Inn that also includes 6 passes to our World Famous Hot Pools/Olympic and heated indoor swimming pools.

INDIVIDUALS who place first receive $50 cash plus a room at the Alpaca Inn that also includes 2 passes to our World Famous Hot Pools/Olympic & heated indoor swimming pools. 2nd Place receives $35 cash and 3rd Place receives $25 cash. (Only those who pay entry fee are eligible for prizes.)

Remember, it isn’t a race, it’s a zany costume contest floating parade! No hurry, just fun!

Bring your taste buds to the Chuck Wagon Restaurant (211 E. Main), where our Chili Cookoff occurs.  Taste Chili and Bread made by locals, as well as imports! 

COST:$5 for adults; Children ages 11 and under are $3. Taste several hot chili samples and vote on your favorites!  For those who enter chili (5 quarts recommended), admission is free. (Contestants should bring entries in no later than 3:45 p.m.)

PRIZES: For those entering Chili, there will be a chance to earn cash prizes of $60, $40, or $20 for top honors.

L Mountain torchlight ski

FIRE PERFORMERS & THE TORCH LIGHT PARADE — Saturday 6 - 8:00 p.m. on L Mountain, above town and Main Street.

Walk downtown and interact with professional fire performers from Incendiary Circus as they perform up and down Main Street Lava! Then stay for the fire shows that will be held at different locations on Main Street.

Fire will also be on L Mountain, if snow permits, as our daredevil skiers go down the mountain with torches!

RUBBER PENGUIN RACE — Sunday, 11:00 a.m. on the Portneuf River

Drop your Penguin in the Portneuf River—the starting line is at the Old Pancake House Bridge. 

COST: $5 for 1 penguin, $20 for 5 penguins. Penguins can be purchased at our Merchandise Hut at 202 E. Main St. or from the Walking Penguins.

PRIZES: The fastest penguins earn prizes, including a $50 gift certificate at the Alpaca Inn and a wagon ride at Baker Ranch!

RUNNING OF THE BULLS — Sunday at Noon down Main Street

Run down Main Street in just a swim suit and flip flops. In the middle of winter. In Idaho. We dare you. 

The zany gets zanier as you soak and run from pool to pool! The starting line is at the hot pools at the Lava Hot Springs Inn and then run east on Main Street to finish at Lava's World Famous Hot Pools.

COST: None.

PRIZES: On top of bragging rights, participants recieve free admission to the Idaho State Hot Pools. Top 3 finishers receive a complimentary buffet breakfast at the Chuckwagon Restaurant!
