The Fire & Ice Winterfest is held each year over the first full weekend of February in the quaint resort town of Lava Hot Springs, Idaho (just over 2 hours North of Salt Lake City), famous for its natural spring-fed hot pools. Come, bring the family and celebrate winter!

WINE TASTING — Friday, 5:00 p.m.
at the Riverside Inn

Start the weekend off with a sampling of Northwest wines and appetizers at the Riverside Inn, located on the banks of the Portneuf River (255 E. Portneuf Ave). 

COST: For $20, you'll enjoy red wines, white wines, and dessert wines, along with their complimenting appetizers. Included in the price is a Fire and Ice Wine Glass to take home!  [ PRE-REGISTER and SAVE ]

COMEDY NIGHT — Friday,  7:30 p.m. at the Greystone Manor

Tickle your funnybone with the hilarious Utah comedians Kiley Cook and Craig Bielik. You've seen Kiley on Laughs TV and opening for such notable comedians as Norm MacDonald, Lewis Black, and Dave Attell. Craig's a comic, a cowboy, a flack, a funny guy, and he can play a mean set of skins! Bring a date to the Greystone Manor (187 S. 2nd W.) and enjoy the show.

DISC GOLF TOURNAMENT — Saturday,  9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Check in at the Lava Hot Springs Inn

Come out for a day of Disc Golfing, and enjoy what is becoming a growing year-round sport! Register at the Lava Hot Springs Inn across from the Olympic Swimming Complex. $5 lunch for participants at The Royal Hotel & Pizza Parlor (11 East Main).

COST: $10 - $35 entry fee (depending on division entered) includes a round of golf, a tee shirt, and a soak at the Lava Hot Springs Inn.

PRIZES: Cash and/or prizes awarded for top three scorers in each division.

GEORGE'S FAMOUS BRUNCH— Saturday, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Lava Hot Springs Inn

All you Can Eat! Treat yourself to George's Famous Brunch along with the soft sounds performers Keum Hwa Chha, D.M.A.(Violinist) and Laura Nelson, M.A.(Pianist) from Idaho’s Civic Symphony at the Lava Hot Springs Inn (94 E. Portneuf Avenue).

WATER CARNIVAL — Saturday, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Olympic Pool Complex

Bring the whole family to the annual FREE Water Carnival, sponsored by the Lava Hot Springs Foundation!  Every 15 minutes there will be a game or challenge to participate in to earn tickets and win prizes!  Melt a frozen egg to find a toy inside, or participate in the mom and tot race!  Climb the rock wall or leap off of the diving boards with style!  Held at the Olympic Swimming Complex.

SNOWSHOE AND NORDIC SKI EVENT — Saturday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Baker Ranch

Snowshoeing or Nordic Ski Snowball Toss in Lava's beautiful country hills. Enjoy the challenge of traversing over the snow and tossing tennis balls into buckets for points in an outdoor obstacle course!  

LOCATION: Baker Wagon Ranch is located at 11716 S. Dempsey Creek, and features a well-marked, 1-1/2 mile groomed trail and warming hut. Baker Ranch provides a great place to take in the wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. 

COST: $15 includes hot beverages, snacks, and snowshoe rental. 

PRIZES: $120, $90, and $60 prizes in wagon ride gift certificates will be awarded to the top scorers!  Snow shoes are limited, so make reservations in advance.

“FROSTY’S” POLAR BEAR FLOAT — Saturday 2 p.m. on the
Portneuf River

One of our zaniest events: the Polar Bear Float!  Jump into the freezing water dressed in your craziest costume, and float down the river on an inner tube!  In the past, we have seen everything from the Easter Bunny to Santa Claus to the infamous band KISS floating down the Portneuf for a chance to win prizes and maybe international fame! 

COST: $10 entry fee. Register at Mountain Mayhem, 156 E. Main, sign a waiver and pick up your tube (included in the fee). 

LOCATION: Contestants enter the river at the Pancake House bridge (253 E. Portneuf Ave) and float for 1/4 mile. 

PRIZES: $100 for best group costume (4 or more people), $50, $35 and $25 for best individual costumes. (Only those who pay entry fee are eligible for prizes.)

CHILI & BREAD TASTING— Saturday 4 - 6  p.m. at the Chuckwagon Restaurant

Bring your taste buds to the Chuck Wagon Restaurant (211 E. Main), where our Chili Cookoff occurs.  Taste Chili and Bread made by locals, as well as imports! 

COST:$5 for adults; Children ages 11 and under are $3. Taste several hot chili samples and vote on your favorites!  For those who enter chili (5 quarts recommended), admission is free. (Contestants should bring entries in no later than 3:45 p.m.)

PRIZES: For those entering Chili, there will be a chance to earn cash prizes of $60, $40, or $20 for top honors.

Hot Dogs and Marshmallows roasting on an open fire with lots of games to play for awhile.

L Mountain torchlight ski

TORCH LIGHT PARADE — Saturday 6 p.m. on L Mountain, above town.

Watch  some daredevils ski down the "L" mountain with torches!  This will be best viewed from Main Street and Center (Shawn's Market). Join the Parade and Light up the night with floating sky lanterns! The floating sky lanterns will be sold at Lava Java (our Merchandise Center) 202 E. Main Street with the mass launch at approximately 6:15 p.m. Purchase a lantern and join us for one of the dazzling traditions of our festival. (Event depends on snow conditions.)

CASINO NIGHT — Saturday 8 - 10 p.m. at the Greystone Manor

Back to the Greystone Manor for a fun night, Vegas style! We'll play Twenty One and Texas Hold 'Em for a chance at the coveted annual winners trophy!  All ages are invited, and there will be wine, beer and snacks for purchase. 

COST: $15 at the door buys your chance to play cards, as well as puts your name in the drawing for some fantastic Raffle Prizes!  [ PRE-REGISTER and SAVE ]

RUNNING OF THE BULLS — Sunday, 11 a.m. to Noon down Main Street

The starting line is at the hot pools at the Lava Hot Springs Inn and then run east on Main Street to finish at Lava's World Famous Hot Pools.

The zany gets zanier as you soak and run from pool to pool! Run down Main Street in just a swim suit and flip flops. In the middle of winter. In Idaho. We dare you. 

COST: None.

PRIZES: On top of bragging rights, participants recieve free admission to the Idaho State Hot Pools. Top 3 finishers receive a complimentary buffet breakfast at the Chuckwagon Restaurant!

RUBBER PENGUIN RACE — Sunday, Noon on the
Portneuf River

Drop your Penguin in the Portneuf River—the starting line is at the Pancake House Bridge. 

COST: $5 for 1 penguin, $20 for 5 penguins. Penguins can be purchased at our Merchandise Hut at 202 E. Main St. or from the Walking Penguins.

PRIZES: The first three winning penguins earn prizes!
